Economics and Performance of Northeastern Nevada Feeder Cattle Feedlot Phase

چکیده
Adding value to feeder cattle through feedlot retained ownership is a marketing alternative most producers often overlook. Universities, private consultants, cattle buyers and feedlot owners/managers have flooded the cattle industry with information pertaining to retained ownership. Yet producers are reluctant to view this as a marketing alternative. Most of this reluctance is due to a lack of experience and understanding of the process, fiscal concerns, distance to feedlot facilities and inability to manage risk associated with retained ownership. This paper discusses the management, economics and performance of Nevada feeder cattle during the feedlot phase of a case study that looked at Texas wheat pasture as a marketing alternative for lightweight calves. Companion papers discuss: Economics and Performance of Lightweight Northeastern Nevada Calves Grazing Texas Wheat Pasture: A Marketing Alternative Case Study, Selecting and Preparing Cattle for Wheat Pasture Grazing, How to Find and Secure Wheat Pasture Grazing, How Good is Wheat Pasture for Winter Grazing Lightweight Calves and Agronomic, Cultural and Livestock Management Practices of Wheat Pasture Grazing.

Southern Section Interdisciplinary Beef Cattle Symposium: Carryover effects of stocker cattle systems on feedlot performance and carcass characteristics.
Stocker cattle production practices may affect subsequent performance of cattle in economically meaningful ways. Literature was reviewed to summarize possible carryover effects of stocker cattle management on finishing performance and carcass traits. The most consistent effects of stocker phase practices on finishing-phase and carcass performance of cattle appear to be explained by changes in p...

Feedlot closeout data is an important tool for measuring cattle performance and management practices for cattle production systems. Often, closeouts are quickly scrutinized by feedlot managers and cattle owners for economics and typical performance measurements and then filed. Unfortunately, a plethora of data that is reported in closeout reports is never adequately analyzed. A dichotomy of dat...

The objective of this study was to compare the effects of 24-h road transport or 24-h feed and water deprivation on acute-phase and performance responses of feeder cattle. Angus × Hereford steers (n = 30) and heifers (n = 15) were ranked by gender and BW (217 ± 3 kg initial BW; 185 ± 2 d initial age) and randomly assigned to 15 pens on d -12 of the experiment (3 animals/pen; 2 steers and 1 heif...

The 2002 USDA Consensus of Agriculture reported a total of 160 beef cow/calf ranches in the US with greater than 2,500 cows. Of these 160 ranches, 60% reside in just four states with Florida, Texas, Nebraska and New Mexico possessing 38, 28, 19, and 10, respectively. These results illustrate a significant anomaly when considering the fate of weaned feeder calves from these major calf producing ...

John M. Marsh (406) 994-5621 [email protected] Prices received by cow-calf producers depend upon many factors including retail beef demand, red meat and poultry supplies, food safety, trade in live cattle and beef, and breeding cattle inventories. In addition, feed grain supplies and prices are important since they impact the cost of gain in cattle finishing. Cost of gain influences feedlot de...
